Workforce Investment Act (WIA):

Through the United States Department of Labor, funding is provided for adults, youth, and dislocated workers for employment and training services. In Michigan, these programs are administered through the statewide Michigan Works! system. Established in 2000, the Workforce Investment Act replaced the Job Training Partnership Act of 1978. Access to the Act may be found at www.doleta.gov.

Work First - Welfare Reform:

Michigan's welfare-to-work program, where individuals receiving Family Independence Agency assistance (Temporary Assistance to Needy Families -TANF) must report to a Michigan Works! agency for orientation and job search assistance. Classes are conducted daily to enable individuals to find employment and ultimately a career. Work First is a statewide program operated by the Michigan Works! system to assist individuals in their job search.

Food Assistance:

Job Search assistance is offered at the Lansing, Charlotte, and St. Johns Service Centers, along with Advent House, for individuals receiving Food Stamps only from the Family Independence Agency.

Wagner Peyser:

Grant which allows Michigan Works! agencies to conduct the labor exchange portion of the Michigan Department of Employment Service. Over 100 Michigan Works! Service Centers provide Michigan Talent Bank job search assistance. Service Centers also house representatives for veteran's services, migrant and seasonal workers, rehabilitation services, and career counseling.

Career Connections:

Career Connections is the Educational Advisory Group to the Workforce Development Board of Capital Area Michigan Works! Michigan Department of Career Development funding offers the opportunity for school administrators to introduce a curriculum geared toward providing students the means to explore and learn about six career pathways. Students, whether college bound or not, learn about various careers and the education involved to achieve them. Students understand why they need to learn certain school subjects. "Careers by choice, not by chance."
